21 Unexpected Ally

‘Miss, miss I forgot my pen.’

‘You need to hurry up Miss, we’ve got assembly.’

‘I ain’t sitting next to her, she’s a cow.’

‘I don’t want your stinky breath next to me.’

‘Miss, she just called me stinky.’

Bryn walked in as the poor science teacher tried to sort out the normal chaos of covering morning registration. At least it was normal for her; the two loud-mouthed girls kicking up a fuss wouldn’t have dreamed of doing it to any of the male teachers. Miss Pringle was a gentle soul, better suited to an academic atmosphere or the maturity of a commercial laboratory than the rough and tumble of an urban high school. He felt sorry for her, but there wasn’t much he could do; he was too busy trying to be mother and father to his brothers. After years on the dole when the mine closed, his dad had recently got a job, so he was never there.

As for his mother; she ran off with a travelling salesman. It was like something from a film; she failed to return from a night out with the girls, leaving her family high and dry. They had some support from their gran, but she wasn’t prepared to cancel the cruise booked a year earlier, so two days later, Bryn was in charge.

Breakfast was going well until the phone rang. His youngest brother jumped, spilling the last of the milk all over the table. It was the nanny saying her son had chicken pox so she couldn’t come. Owen tried to help, using the nearest thing to mop it up; Bryn’s tie. He hadn’t spotted the milk dripping onto the chair and when he sat in the puddle, Bryn leapt up, sending the rest of his breakfast down his school trousers. He was at his wits’ end when the girl who lived next door appeared. Sian heard the commotion from the garden and offered to help out. Bryn grabbed her life-saving offer and ran to school. It was no good, the gates were locked and his head of year was on late duty.

He was kept back in assembly, given a warning about poor timekeeping and lack of uniform, and made to clear away the chairs with all the other offenders. When he got to the English lesson, there was no sign of the teacher and the rest of the class were chilling or messing around.

‘You lot need to keep a lid on it; I heard you all the way down the corridor and the deputy head’s on the prowl.’

‘Who the fuck do you think you are, telling us what to do?’

It was the same loud-mouth who’d disrupted Miss Pringle’s registration the day before. Ignoring the cronies backing her, Bryn kept his expression bland. ‘I know exactly who I am. The guy trying to stop you from getting into more trouble.’

‘It’s way too late. When they find out what she’s done, they’re gonna throw away the key.’ Her best friend/worst enemy got in on the act, chiming in with a giggle.
